Transformer Energization and Generator Starting Studies

Objective

Ensuring safe and reliable operation of transformers and generators during energization and startup is crucial for system stability. This study focuses on minimizing inrush currents, voltage dips, and system disturbances that may occur during these processes. Our goal is to perform detailed analysis and provide strategies that align with industry standards and specific site requirements to enhance operational efficiency.

Methodology

Transformer Energization Analysis: We analyze inrush currents and their impact on the power system, including voltage dips and harmonic distortion.

Generator Starting Analysis: We evaluate starting current requirements and their effects on system stability, ensuring minimal disruption during startup.

Mitigation Strategies: We recommend solutions such as staggered energization, pre-insertion resistors, or soft-start mechanisms to reduce adverse effects.

Examples

  •  For HV&MV substations, analyzed the inrush current during the energization of the transformers. The studies assessed the impact on upstream equipment and system voltage stability, leading to the recommendation of controlled energization to mitigate inrush effects.
  • At mining sites, we conducted generator starting studies for diesel generators. The analysis ensured that voltage dips during startup remained within permissible limits and recommended soft-start mechanisms to reduce the impact on critical loads connected to the network.
  • We evaluated the energization of step-up transformers connecting the inverters to the grid. The studies identified potential harmonic distortions and recommended staggered energization sequences to prevent simultaneous inrush currents, ensuring compliance with AEMO guidelines

Through these studies, we ensure the safe integration of transformers and generators into the power system, minimizing operational risks and maintaining system stability.
