Voltage Control Study

Objective

Voltage control studies are essential for ensuring the stability and reliability of power systems. These studies focus on maintaining voltage levels within acceptable limits under various operating conditions. Our goal is to ensure compliance with distribution system requirements while optimizing the performance of voltage regulation systems across different operational scenarios.

Methodology

Voltage Regulation Analysis: We assess the performance of voltage control systems, including reactive power compensation devices such as SVCs, STATCOMs, and capacitor banks, under dynamic operating conditions.
Generator and Inverter Voltage Support: We evaluate the capability of generators and inverter-based systems to provide voltage support during normal and fault scenarios.
System Optimization: We recommend settings for automatic voltage regulators (AVRs), on-load tap changers (OLTCs), and reactive power compensators to maintain grid voltage stability.

Examples

  • For renewables integrated into transmission and distribution networks, we conducted voltage control studies to ensure the farm’s inverters maintained grid voltage stability during peak generation. Our analysis optimized inverter settings and reactive power controls to meet the requirements.
  • At a mining facility, we analyzed voltage fluctuations caused by large motor startups. The study led to the installation of dynamic reactive power compensation systems, ensuring voltage levels remained stable during high-demand operations.
  • We conducted several voltage control studies for hybrid systems combining solar PV, wind turbines, BESS, and synchronous generators. Our studies evaluated the coordinated operation of these components to support grid voltage stability under varying load and generation conditions, resulting in optimized settings for reactive power devices and OLTCs.

Through comprehensive voltage control studies, we help ensure the efficient operation and stability of power systems across various renewable energy and industrial projects.
