Harmonic Study

Objective

Power quality and system reliability are critical for the efficient operation of electrical systems. This study focuses on identifying and mitigating harmonic distortions, particularly those caused by nonlinear loads and renewable energy systems. With extensive experience in harmonic studies, we ensure compliance with standards such as AS/NZS 61000 for electromagnetic compatibility, safeguarding equipment and maintaining regulatory adherence.

Methodology

Harmonic Analysis: We evaluate harmonic levels in the power system, including total harmonic distortion (THD) and individual harmonic orders, using advanced simulation tools.
Compliance Verification: We assess system performance against harmonic limits specified in AS/NZS 61000 and recommend corrective measures if necessary.
Mitigation Strategies: We design harmonic filters, optimize system impedance, and recommend operational adjustments to reduce harmonic
distortion.

Examples

  • We conducted harmonic analysis to evaluate the impact of variable frequency drives (VFDs) on the distribution network. The study identified highorder harmonics and led to the design of tuned passive filters to reduce THD within permissible limits.
  • For solar farms connected to transmission networks, we analyzed harmonic levels caused by inverter operations.
  • The analysis identified resonance risks and resulted in the implementation of active harmonic filters in some cases to maintain power quality.

By conducting thorough harmonic studies, we provide tailored solutions that enhance power quality, protect equipment, and ensure reliable operation across diverse industrial and renewable energy systems.
